I want to reduce poverty
Poverty is one of the world's most serious problems, but it can also inspire innovative business models.
Even for small companies in Denmark
Remember that there is poverty in the West as well as in the developing world. And remember that even small companies can help fight poverty, for example by:
- Creating jobs for groups normally excluded from employment, such as the homeless, dysfunctional youths and the long-term unemployed.
- Developing new products that can help fight the causes of poverty. This might mean providing cheap clean water, access to loans or educational opportunities.
Drinking water from the toilet bowl
One Danish company, which has been able to develop a new product that is making a big difference to the world is Vestergård Frandsen. This company has developed a special drinking straw called LifeStraw® which purifies dirty water as it is sucked up through the straw.
LifeStraw® is cheap to produce and so effective that you can drink water straight from the toilet bowl through the straw. What is more, it can supply a person with 18,000 litres of clean water before it must be replaced.
